Rice's Environmental Health and Safety Department provides support to the Rice Community in chemical safety by setting guidelines for hazardous chemicals, chemical spills, and facility design. The department also works with local, state and federal agencies to ensure compliance with government codes and policies and assure everyone that Rice University is a safe place to work and study.  Any laboratory using any hazardous chemicals must develop a Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) that is specific to the laboratory's operation and scope of research.  You may use the following template as a guideline in developing your CHP.

Dow Chemicals recently developed a laboratory safety website with instructional videos that provide a good resource for chemist to use when planning experiments.  Publicly accessible at http://safety.dow.com,these videos covers a ranges of topics all but not limited to:

  • Exposure control
  • Good laboratory practices
  • Specialized chemical techniques
  • Chemical and waste management

These videos may be used to enhance your safety training but should not be used as a substitute for in person training.  In additional, you should always consult with your Principal Investigator or the senior lab member before attempting any reaction or experimental you are not familiar with.
