The Fire and Life Safety division of the Environmental Health and Safety Department is responsible for the compliance of local fire code and federal building codes in the areas of fire alarms, fire sprinkler systems, fire extinguishers and building egress. This EH&S team coordinates fire safety inspections of academic and residential buildings on and off campus, assists with testing of all fire alarm and suppression equipment, coordinates activities with the Houston Fire Marshalls Office for special events and conducts training for faculty, staff and students in the area of fire safety and the use of portable fire extinguishers.  In addition, the EHS team reviews plans for new and remodeled construction projects with Facilities Engineering and Planning, to ensure Rice University facilities continue to be a safe place to live, work, and study.
