Fire Safety Education and Training
During Orientation Week and throughout the year, students, faculty and staff attending safety training receive instructions on how to evacuate a building using the closest emergency exit. Rice University Police Department (RUPD) and Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) are trained in emergency response, fire safety and evacuation procedures.
All fire alarm panels at Rice University are monitored 24 hours a day by the RUPD dispatcher. Upon activation of any alarm, RUPD dispatcher will notify their officers and EHS staff.
Reentry of the building should not occur until instructed by emergency personnel. In select building an all clear will be issued via the fire alarm system.
Students, faculty, and staff are advised to call RUPD at 713-348-6000 to report an alarm or any situation that could potentially become a hazard, fire situation or an emergency.
Highrise safety training is conducted annually by Houston Fire Department.
Fire Extinguishers
Fire extinguisher training courses are offered by EHS staff upon request.
Fire extinguishers in academic and residental buildings are inspected and maintained by EHS. If a fire extinguisher is discharged in your area, please contact EHS at 713-348-4444 so the extinguisher may be replaced.
